Mastering engineer Chris Bellman, who remastered the original albums at Bernie Grundman Mastering Studios, was enlisted for this new version. In order to produce the original sound the band intended, Bellman cut straight from the quarter-inch tapes.

I bought this CD at a local music store. This CD is the first Van Halen album I bought. It is a quality remaster and it sounds amazing. I like it better everytime I listen to it. It contains 10 songs, and pretty much all the songs on this album are underrated. The Good: This album (Van Halen II) was remastered using the original master tapes, and it shows. The quality of sound on this CD was better than I thought it would be. I originally thought this CD was a NOS (New old stock) issue from the late 80's. The reason is because; the CD comes in a standard black jewel case which is very rare with new CDs. (full clear CD cases pretty much took over by the late 90's and while the original design with a black plastic inlay disk holder is still manufactured, it is rarely used in reissues and new albums) The CD itself is seemingly "vintage" to. The top side of the CD is plain silver (just like the bottom side that gets read by a CD players laser) with black printed text. CDs haven't looked like that in 25-30 years. It's a simple look that works well. The CD booklet is two pages, featuring a track listing and some pictures of the band members. The Bad: The CD is nearly perfect. The only thing that should be adjusted is the price. The standard retail price is $11.98, which in my opinion is 1-2 dollars more than it should be. If the CD had a full booklet with lyrics, it would easily be worth $11.98. In its current form, it should be priced at $9.98 or $10.98. Other than the price, it is a great album and a great CD. (I hope the remastered Van Halen album stay in jewel cases, digipacks or cardboard sleeves are really cheap and end up scratching and damaging the CD. CD Jewel Cases Forever!)
