Punk Rock Logo Tie Dye
Red tie dye shirt featuring Van Halen's rarely-seen "punk rock" logo! This unique jagged logo was the one Warner Bros created in 1977 and proposed for Van Halen's first album. The band thought it looked "too punk" and then went with the classic logo we all know.
At the time, punk rock was all the rage on the Sunset Strip, and Van Halen frequently shared stages at clubs like the Starwood and the Whisky a Go Go with pioneering punk bands. From Warner Bros. perspective, it just made good business sense to try to capitalize on what appeared to be the musical wave of the future by trying to convince the public that Van Halen was part of the punk movement, along with Sex Pistols and The Clash!
Despite the band’s objections, this Van Halen logo did make it onto one official Van Halen release in January 1978. It was used on a promotional red vinyl EP released in advance of the debut record, distributed only to radio station personnel and selected music press.
So this is the first logo on any official release from the band. And this is the only official shirt ever made with that logo.
Go back to the time Van Halen's jaw-dropping music was being played on the radio for the first time! Pure amazement!
60% Recycled Cotton, 40% Recycled Polyester. Uniquely washed and dyed garment with a soft, vintage feel.
Note: Around three years ago we sold this same shirt, but with an ultra-bright red tie dye. This version, as pictured, is a bit more subdued red, which we really dig!
Regular-Fit. Fashionable, not boxy.
